Gearing Ratio

Also called financial leverage. Calculated as long-term debt divided by equity plus long-term debt multiplied by 100, the gearing ratio reflects the percentage of capital available for an enterprise that is financed by debt and long-term arrangements. Generally, the higher the gearing, the greater the risk. Gearing is a U.K. term used for financial leverage.
